We were asked by our client to restore and modernise this cottage to create an open plan kitchen. Whilst the brief was to modernise the cottage it was also important to install character and charm.
To create an open plan kitchen, we removed the internal load bearing wall and used a bright kitchen as the light that entered the room was poor. A centre island helped break up the kitchen and flowed into the dining area.
On the first floor there were low ceilings, though by removing them it exposed beautiful king post trusses, therefore we vaulted to ceilings to be able to see these majestic timbers.
As one would expect with timbers of this age there was the likelihood that wood boring insects had attacked them during the course of the building’s life. We did not find any active activity though more of a precaution whilst we were carrying out the refurbishment works these were cleaned and treated.
Bringing the project to completion, we were very happy with the end results, though more importantly, the client was over the moon.
